“We have a work culture that promotes the freedom to learn, create, improvise, work independently and to be entrepreneurial,” Subin says. “I enjoy the camaraderie with my colleagues and being a part of something larger that positively impacts our clients and makes a difference in the communities around us.”

For Subin, the greatest success is DCI’s next success. Most achievements are celebrated just for a moment because the team is already on to the next challenge. Past projects pale in comparison, he says, because clients are counting on them to solve a problem, to guide them through something they haven’t done before or to meet a need that other companies can’t. “They rely on us in so many ways,” he says, “and we will deliver.”

Manzur entered the engineering field in 1990 and joined DCI in 1998. Since then he’s been motivated by the diverse work opportunities at DCI. He has always stressed exceling in quality of work and has steered DCI towards the use of emerging engineering concepts. He is guided by the philosophy “Follow knowledge,” from the poem Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. To him that means to keep learning, to always have the answer for his clients, and to be able to support his designs with data and experience.

“I research and I study, so I never have to keep my fingers crossed,” Manzur says. “I will always work to the best of my ability and take pride in doing good work for anyone — my kids, my spouse and my clients.”

“There’s a level of independence here that lets you take ownership of your work,” Kiran says. “Dreams don’t become reality with magic. It takes sweat, determination and hard work.”

Looking back at his career so far, there isn’t one particular project that stands out for Kiran. Instead he takes pride in his consistent ability to receive an assignment with enthusiasm, complete it on time and keep it within budget. Kiran delivers dependability to his clients.

In 2014 Mammen transferred leadership of the company to several key staff members. He will remain on staff as an operations manager during the period of transition to assure that the new owners have the benefit of his knowledge about the company’s operations and all of the business aspects of the engineering consulting industry.

Today his personal objective is for the company to earn the complete confidence of its clients. He says that will come from consistently delivering a technically superior product, giving clients the most value for their money, and proving that they can put all of their trust into DCI.

Since then he’s developed a solid philosophy: Prepare for the unexpected. “There are many challenges to any engineering project and because of that there’s the possibility of issues that were unforeseen at the commencement of a project,” he says. “Experience and effort allow you to prepare for these sometimes unexpected challenges, and you will ultimately become better at keeping a project on budget and on schedule.”

Larry is motivated by overcoming the obstacles that are presented to him through DCI’s involvement with numerous types of projects. DCI typically has smaller parts of large projects, so it is generally involved with more projects then would be expected from a midsize engineering firm. Larry enjoys the collaboration among his colleagues in the time he spends in the Columbia, Md., office, while his time managing North Carolina operations gives him the freedom to take on challenges independently.

At DCI, where he has worked since 1992, he manages the water resources group and supports the survey, structures and civil engineering groups. Clients describe Richard as deeply knowledgeable and well-versed in regulatory requirements, allowing him to deliver a product that leads to minimal revisions and on-time completion.

His general duties as a professional engineer include expedited SWM reviews, preparing SWM and drainage improvement plans, preparing drainage and floodplain studies, preparing site development and highway plans for private and government clients, and preparing water, sewer and conduit utility plans.

With more than 30 years in the industry, he’s found that although DCI is a smaller firm it offers diversity of work and types of clients, and that’s what keeps it interesting. “I can think of no other firm of this size that does everything that we do,” he says. “There is no such thing as pigeon-holing people at DCI like I see at other firms.”

“The transportation network is essential to getting people and resources to various places safely and efficiently,” Tanya says. “What keeps me motivated is knowing that the projects we plan and design will directly impact people’s lives for the better. My friends and family travel these roads, and that gives me even more reason to do my best.”

Tanya believes success is so much more than the bottom line. To her, success is loyalty to the client, to the government agencies they work with, and to the communities impacted by their planning and designs.
